Dictionaries

Our Dictionaries have been prepared by CentroCompetencia UAI and are updated periodically. They form part of our effort to explain and disseminate basic concepts in a simple manner, in order to assist students, academics, public authorities, and the general public interested in competition policy and law. Unless expressly indicated otherwise, these are terms in common use across different jurisdictions and are not confined to any specific legal system or body of legislation. Use of this material is subject to the same terms and conditions as this website, and, accordingly, the content published in the Glossaries, as well as on the website, is for informational purposes only, may be out of date, and does not constitute—and should not be regarded as—legal advice. No user of this website, or any person who obtains information from it, should act or refrain from acting on the basis of this information, nor consider it a substitute for legal advice.

Substantive Law Dictionary

This Dictionary consists of a set of legal and economic concepts that form part of the basic vocabulary of competition law and industrial organization. Its content seeks to strike a balance between an academic perspective (grounded in the literature) and a practical approach, aimed at the effective application of theoretical concepts to real-world competition cases. In addition, this Dictionary is designed to be multi-jurisdictional, addressing the ways in which these concepts have been applied in competition-law case law across different countries.

Procedural Law Dictionary

This glossary is a collective work organized by CeCo UAI, made possible thanks to the valuable contributions of attorneys Nicolás Carrasco D. (Professor, University of Chile), Andrés Fuchs N. (Professor, University of Santiago de Chile), and CeCo’s legal researchers. It consists of a set of procedural-law concepts, explained in plain language and supported by specific references to judgments and decisions issued by the judicial bodies with jurisdiction over competition matters. Its aim is to democratize the practical exercise of this area of law, serving as a resource for practicing lawyers and officials at competition authorities.
